I expected waves of emotion and nostalgia up on the hill, etc. And in fact, when I first had a chance to go to the Main Building site, I couldn't do it.
What I didn't expect was the wave that hit me on the front porch of the store. What the heckj was that all about? I stood on the wood porch and read every poster. Then I went inside and stood there like a lummox.
There were people talking at the counter about "you haven't changed" and I thought it was FC folk. It was people in town for a family reunion.
Anyway, I drifted the aisles. Different merchandise, but they still carry Drake's Funny Bones and that was nice. No MD 20/20 though.
With that kind of nostalga at the freakin' store, if the building HAD been there, I'd still be cryin' in the halls.
Re: Franconia Store
I spoke with Mr. Ford (of the hardware store family) who is now in the realty business on Saturday. He expressed sincere longing for the college and laments its demise. He thought, if the local community had only been more serious in their ability to assist in keeping the school open that it would still be there. In any case, it was nice to hear a local franconian express his feelings and stating that many felt the same.
