Thinking back on it
Friday, 06-Oct-00 23:22:22

I went up to the North Country...and came home again. I got so swept up in my life, haven't had a chance to reflect on it all. Finally paying a visit to the "pages". And so the images come up. Wasn't that a time! As I drove North out of Boston up that familiar route, it seemed the air got thinner and crisper as the trees got darker and the skies closed in. Tears came just before the entrance to the Notch. I was early. A dog wandered by wearing an apron. Message on the apron: I am not a dog. ...Of course. Nancy and Judy looking grand...and just exactly like: Nancy and Judy. Mark Chain buzzing and zipping, just as he always had. Mel...Mel. And then there were more faces...and everyone looked...well. And fine. And I felt that they belonged to me. Bob and Chip strolling the college grounds. What were you remembering? What have I forgotten? Trolling out the winding road past Streeter Pond...remembering Skip striding. Andy wearing his best and proper deer caught in the headlights look, spiraling round the edges of the room. We talked in a tent. Marty smiling. Svi and Louise bucketing through Bethlehem remembering the bank robbery. John and Miki...I've the photos of you--looking up. Looking...puzzled. Natalie and all the womens' work never done. John Craig's several hats and Janet in her Merrimekko. The places mattered too. Agazzi Road and the field where I remember seeing the bear, standing on a rock, sniffing at a late spring snow. You all didn't know St Mary's in the Mountains, but I did..and suddenly saw Josh and Jill and Josh's saluki hound...Chris and Mark Downing. David, where are you? Hey Rusty, standing among the books...holding up another pillar of the world. I'd forgotten how lovely it all is...Sugar Hill swathed in a lifting fog..the Presidentials coming into view as the wind whipped the clouds to shreds. And Layfayette. I'm amazed and moved. It made a difference. You've all made a difference.
