Its been years since I thought of looking up Franconia on the Web and I did and found your site--I was at franconia 1971 to 73-had with Nancy Schneider and Frank Sweetser started the Outing club and did a climbing class for the college--Iget to franconia a lot and miss the old place-

I was doing a search on the name Pilove and found a Kenneth Pilove on your list. I am quite sure this is my Xhusband and he is deceased. This name is quite rare and it is very doubtful that there would be another with this name in the States. Since I have 2 sons with the last name, Pilove, I was interested to track a half-brother for them if possible. His name was Christopher Pilove.

This is such a great site, kudos to everyone involved in designing and maintaining this eclectic piece of Americana!

My resume use to read graduated from Laconia HS, Franconia College and resides on Vasconia Ave. I've been asked more than once if I made that up.

Now I can send the nay sayers here and prove once and for all, that for a brief span of time, there really was a magical college of the free spirited craddled in the heart of the White Mountains. What a fanastic adventure it was!

Does anyone know how to reach Renee Wright of Robert Zurrow?

My correct email addy is ddrenber@tampabay.rr.com I reversed some of the letters in my previous post. It was the shear excitement of finding this site.

Well I arrived at Franconia College in 1976 and it closed its doors the following year. What an experience leaving a strict Quaker Boarding School to attend free spirited Franconia...I went on to finish at Earlham College in Indiana. After 13 years as a Social Worker for the State of NJ..I am now an investigator for fraud and abuse for the state. I spend 1/2 of my week at my home at the NJ shore and the other up in Princeton. I'd love to hear from my old classmates----Scott Emmons, Claire,Lee etc..

I just read in your big book of names that Kenneth Reid is dead. Does anyone have more information about this. Also, I am now remarried and new name is Lea Belair new email, IcoachUwin@leapcoaching.com (please change it on the website). The site looks great, thanks! You might want to add a search option so that people can get more targeted information more easily. If anyone knows more about Ken Reid you can email me directly.

To Karen Feinberg: Sorry for the delayed response; I was traveling for the last few weeks. We don't know where Gail Weiss or David Handel are. I'll try a web search if you can provide any helpful info (which towns they might be in, what their interests/professions are, etc.). Also, it's easier for us to keep you informed about things Franconian if we have your email address. If you send it to me I'll add you to our list for (very) occasional mailings. Thanks.

Well, I think I can bring an end to the controversy about Paul Stunzi's demise. I spoke with him on the phone yesterday afternoon and from what I could tell, he is alive and well, enjoying life in a similar fashion to that which we came to know him at FC. He is messing around with old cars, sailing and has kids. Soooooo.......

Bob, no luck finding Paul Worthington or Patty Grady. Many other folks share those names. We tried to find Chip Thomas last year in PA without success -- I think we chased some out of date listings.

Chip Rocky is found but I'm not sure if he's communicating with FCers. You can email me for his contact info. Check these out --

I was at Franconia 1972-75. Anyone know how to find Dawnel White? I'm a writer and historian living in Berkeley, CA. Following a couple of head injuries, most recently in November, 2000 I'm better at faces than names. I'm interested in finding the members of the women's group I was in in the fall of 1972 when Robin Sterns was killed in a car accident, those involved with the Women's Center in Litleton, and Cloud who lived in the HUD dorms.

Amazing. "Space City" in cyberspace. (Anybody remember that banner?) Thank you Steven and Fred--especially former roomie-of-the-week (I managed to go through a lot of them somehow) Steven, who went to the trouble of tracking me down. Ah, those lovely Golden Days. Well, sort of.
My fond regards to anyone out there who might have any use for them. I'd like to believe you're all alive and reasonably well, as am I.

What a delight, Steven Konover found my resume on the web and emailed me this morning. I'm returned to Spring '70, my one semester at Franconia. Only one, but what a one. "Guys and Dolls", Kent State, the "march on Washington" in a panel truck (we stopped off to pick up my parents), the search for a new President (Leon, not Dick), the rock pool and black flies. That semester was an unbelievable experience for me. Any knowledge I've attained in life was provided room by that time and place.

Thanks Steven for finding me. And thanks, all of you, for still being here.

I saw Michael Dorris at a writer's conference in Sun Valley, Idaho about a month before he committed suicide. He remembered me from his class because we'd clashed about something... got to hear him read from one of his books.

I first heard about Franconia in '70 watching a news item in LA. All these folks in big, puffy, brightly colored parkas with massive beards and/or long hair. Hopped in my car and drove cross country. Interested in Don Ross, Bill Congdon, Buzz Baker, and any survivor of "Convergence."

How incredibly wonderful! Sweet Franconia! Youíve haunted me longingly through the years. Your deep, piney woods and pure, snowy, peaks, your chiseled, granite outcroppings, peering above icy shimmering lakes. A deluge of memories, some cosmic, others bearing the sweet painfulness of departed youth, envelope me as I wallow in reverie and reverence.
This is almost too good to be true. I feel as though Iíve found a long lost kindred spirit. After so long a time Franconia has become a castle in the clouds, a looming mirage, a cryptic allegory, the meaning of which Iíve never quite deciphered or resolved.
I look forward to the possibility of re-establishing old and dear friendships, and recollecting with any whoíve experienced the wonderment of Franconia College.

I see that I am on the 'big list' as found. I wonder who found me? Actually, Neil McLaughlin is Director of Mental Health for New Castle County, Delaware. I live in Wilmington and ran into him one day as I came out of my office accross from one of his mental health clinics. I remember Franconia each day as I log onto my computer. I was there from 72-75, one of thehandful of Black kids and active in community governance. I left for my Outreach at the University of Chicago dropped out of U of C finished at Shimer College, another 'hippie school' and went back to U of C as a graduate student. I left grad school and found that the first Harold Washington campaign, where I worked doing targeting and other technical stuff initiated my addiction to electoral politics. I have worked as an Organizer (No one at Franconia ever knew that I am a 'Red Diaper Baby' and the son of an Organizer). I have been involved in organizing Unions and communities of various types. I write a lot of analytical pieces on community, development of economies and political issues. I think that I was destined to be a writer because it was the thing I avoided most during my schooling. (I had a natural aversion to things I did well.) I found out about the reunion from Rita Katz Farrell, a Reuters reporter from Wilmington who told me that she was off to her place in Bethlehem for her Summer vacation. That stimulated some great conversations! I would have attended the reunion but I was inolved in a heated primary election. My two candidate lost but our role was to take some hits that helped the challenger to the incumbent Mayor. The challenger won and I am considering some 'straight' work in government. I would like the title 'Generalissimo' or 'Grand Pooobah'. It's likely that I will wind up working with Community Development. I miss my 'Franconia self'. It held the beginnings of an interesting life. Over the years I have seen Craig Purdy, who still has the ability to pull me from any respsonsible project I am doing to go off with him on an adventure most of the time. I haven't talked to him in a while though. I went to Jules Feiler's ediings where I was mistaken for a member of the Reggae band. I am saddened to hear of the deaths of Muff (Ivan Wendell-Hubbard) who told me a great story about how he got his nickname once when we were getting stoned. Also Flip Miller and George Wheeler. Years ago I ran into Ben Nadel at the Institute for Advanced Study. His wife Mirra (my Russian teacher) had died. I miss the school, students, community, faculty and learning. Can I still make up my incompletes? I'd love to hear from some folks. Mark Brunswick

In response to some search efforts of a couple of months ago, I recieved a very sad card today from Tuggy's sister Christina, which said that she had died of breast cancer in February '98 after a three year struggle. She went on to say that after Franconia College, Tuggy had gotten a BA in Special Ed. from Goddard, married, moved to Seattle and opened an upholstery shop, "Cathy's Cushions" which is still run by her husband.

Had a great time re-remembering most of you folks at the reunion and am sorry many were not able to attend. I am currently editing my video I took at Peabody with some stills..I will be giving a copy to Skip Lau to add to the booty of videos he is hoping to collect from the event and other sources. There are many things I miss from Franconia such as political arguments in the cafeteria, the people and the place both just as accuetly and listening to Chris Catalfamo tell about the civil war reenactments she'd been in. I never knew there were civil war reenactments until I met Chris. Since then I have seen fields covered with little white tents that were pitched in precise rows. In fact, I cannot see a tent of that era, or anything else about the civil war without thinking of her.

Being bored as I frequently would be they would offer great entertainment. Many of them were musicians and actors. Coby Baty & John Horton are a couple of names I remember. The reunion a fabulous success, it was not without a sad moment or two. We did learn, from Tic Ward, whom it was wonderful to see, of the demise from AIDS of Jim Hays, a Franconian of the Ruopp era.

Gwen Synder is in Alabama, I believe. Don't know were Sue is, last I heard from her was in '74, when she sent me a wedding anouncement--she'd married her Canadian boyfriend so that she could stay in Canada. I've still got the anouncement, but not at work here with me. Was she still married in '76?

Didn't see Gwen Schnieder's name on the "Big List." Could have sworn she was there the two years I was - even did a geology tutorial for her and sneaked the paperwork into her file in the Registrar's office. Or mybe I was trippin'? Last I heard of Sue Staehli she was out in the boodocks of western Canada (Alberta?) trying to survie. Last letter from her talked of wolves being held at bay by campfire and high-powered rifle with too few cartridges. Now THAT's "gettin' back to the earth!" Haven't heard from since maybe '76. Hope she made it back up the river and lives there - wherever "there" is - yet. S.

Alerted to Y2K reunion by Ms. Linda Feczko, faithful keeper-track-of-Franconia-doings person, who tracked me down and threatened to beat me over the head with her curriculum vitea if I didn't: 1)Come and sign in here, and 2) show up at the reunion this weekend. Short notice, but I'll try Linda - honest! Living in Gorham, NH - just around the corner from "pecatum en colis" (spelling probably wrong - ask Nick Home to corret it. He spell-checked everything else I ever handed him...) Which was as far as my beat up old 54 Chevy would take me when I fled - ahem, left - the school in '74. Geologist: Benched by dual hip replacements, '92 & '93, and arthritic lower spine. Now "arm chair consultant" and quasi-writer/author. Rockhound, caver, Jeeper, USFS political hangeroner/gadfly. General all around rock rat and bum. Married: Sharon O'Neill, AMC staff, Pinkham Notch, computer nerd - and my best friend. No kids, just cats. Favorite memories of Franconia: Neil at the pinball machine. View of Lafayette from my window. Turi taking up all the room on Nick's couch. Jory's omlets. Tray sliding on the hill in winter. Trying to tray slide on the hill when it wasn't winter. Jon Svwiberg's smiling face at the bookstore or library desk. Linda Grantham higher than a kite with wonder in her eyes. Sue Stahli's teepee with her smiling face sticking out the flap. Vince hanging from the rafters of the bell tower like a bat - with a black cape wrapped around him. Pressed Rat climbing Cathedral Ledge with terror in his eyes. "Ma" at the door to the caf. (See, I do remember - in spite of the pot and hash... :~} ) Who I would most like to see at the reunion: Jon, Linda & Linda, Sue, Neil & Nick, Bill McCauley. Hope to catch you guys this weekend. BRENT BERNATH died in 1988, of a malignant melanoma found on his back during his intake exam at Riker's Island prison. His brother Stephan confirmed this when I called to catch up with Brent in 1998 -- time passes quickly, whether you're having fun or not. Brent and I stayed in touch from 1968-88. Sara "SALLY" SLOCUM died at home in Albany, NY from complications related to alcoholism, on New Year's Eve, 1995. Any news of/from former FC poetry teacher EDWARD DORO; security (tee-hee) man JAKE ALDRIGE; EILEEN McGOWAN; JAIRD BYRNE; RICK CLEMONS; TONY IRONS; RICKI PODNOS; DUNCAN MACINTOSH (or his Porche); MICHAEL MAXWELL; or JIM HAYES?

A slight change needs to be made for Ellen Makarewicz's memorial.. She died after accidently eating water hemlock (while collecting and eating water cress)in New Mexico. This happened on Feb 3,1990. She was a genius in several creative areas...dancer,visual artist and writer...she also was an exceptional athelete(qualifing for the Olympics in marathon running)....but most of all she was an unique human being, a brillant beam of light, joyous and generous of heart...still sorely missed by many who love her.

Thanks to Gene Banks, Ann Rogers, Milo Milliams, Bill Manser, and Morgan Ackerly I have found the way to the FC reunion... now Moose, if I can remember "What month is this?!" (where is Tic Ward?), my wife and I can look for my mind, and friends, all at the reunion. I think the Brazilian someone is looking for was called Salomon Schrempf (sp?). I'll ask Bill Manser, because the three of us went to a military show in Montreal - and Salomon was driving when a NYS trooper pulled us over (for speeding) and Salomon gave him his Brazilian Driver's License, spoke no English to the officer, and generally left us in stitches as he continued to speed on in Bill's black and blue (remember it, Harry?) VW. Does anyone remember (probably not) seeing "Yellow Submarine" in living black and white besides Moose and DeFiore? I think my youngest boy may have tried to smoke something illegal with his friends the other night. We had a long chat, where I informed him that I never inhaled in college. My teaching partner went to Goddard at the same time as I did, she says that she never inhaled either... Besides the obvious humour that we look back with on those days at FC, I can say that I am proud of all the good that the FC community has brought to the present day planet of ours. I still play the 'pipes, compete in the solos all over N. America and I am willing to bring the 'pipes if Peter Cerchiara brings his drums, and people don't mind a little Celtic music. By the way, who is "Ticonderoga"? Being from Ticonderoga myself, I am also a little curious... Although slightly daunted at the thought of seeing so many of you (sorry you can't make it Joan, but Harry better!)after so many years, things look beautifully put together by a fabulous bunch of you. Congratulations. Keep it under a hundred, see ya there. Fran Pell Dechame

What a great little flashback reading all the names and absorbing all the comments. Malcolm Boyd asked about Paul Stunzi and reliable sources say Paul is dead. I agree with Lenny Feinberg that Larry Kelly's name should be on the memorial list. I was also at his funeral with Leny, Michelle, the Big Man and others. What about Mark Simone who was riding high on PIX-FM in NYC with his Simone phone schtick? Is he back in the Detroit area. Talk about someone who stood out like a sore thumb at Franconia. He and Laryy Kelly looked like a bunch of old men when they arrived on the scene. Look forward to seeing old faces and jogging the memory banks at the reunion.

Anybody know what happened to Bob Schell? Mitch told me Bob ran a campground somewhere in Canada. Also - please add Nancy Schneider to the Memorial list. She attended FC 72-74, I believe. I met her when we were neighbors in Brooklyn in the mid 1980's. We became friends, drifted apart, she attended law school in Iowa, got married, moved back to New Jersey, and had a kid. What an incredible find! Who could possibly imagine that there would be an FC website, let alone an FC reunion. I've seen a lot of familiar names from 'this wayback' machine but I'm intrigued by some not yet located; From 1963-65, what about Marty Bowes, Tommy Straub, Betts Denny, Frank Wolfer. I've got a copy of the '65 FC yearbook.....and my God, half the names I don't remember. Would like to hear from anyone from those early years. in 1970, I was sitting on the roof of the New Dorm, when Bot came up and told me that Henry Kellum had been shot and killed while flying back to Oakland California whene he lived. The facts I know about Henry were these. He was the most unlikely Franconia College student ever! He had a passion for the concept of equal Justice, He was an active member of the Black Panther party. Henry had been in the California reform school system, but he was smart enough to know he wasn't going back to being "a victim" of white "justice" I heard the report of Henry's death. But I never was able to confirm this report.

So here goes: I am looking for Jonathan Cairns, Deb Lennox, Richard Buckland and Bradley Palmer. Please help if you can. So many wonderful memories. I can't wait for this event. I am very hopeful that some of the negative overtones found periodically are simply as a result of the expressions of anxieties as we all have fond memories even if all the parts of the memories are equally as positive. I found Joseph Heckstall who was at FC in 1965-66, he lives in Atlanta and is a State Representative. He knows about the reunion. I looked for International Relations 1964-66 teacher Maryanne Yacenko, and there is a Nina Yacenko in South Ackworth, NH which is where her family farm was. Nina may be her sister or that may be her mother's name. I saw Artis Alls's name (on Memorial list) (FC summer High School Program 1966, then at FC later). I remember him well as coming up from Albany Georgia with several summer students. I saw the name Artis Alls in a newspaper article in the 1980 in Atlanta involving some kind of homicide. I corresponded by e-mail with Lenny Kammerling 1965 in Alaska. He knows of the reunion but will not be able to be there due to documentary film making, but he is in Fairbanks. A couple of years ago I made contact with Joel Wishengrad FC in 1965-1966 who was, I believe, in Pennsylvania or Maryland. I have not been able to locate him again and believe he does not know of the reunion. I have a 1965 and 1966 admissions catelogue and the 1966 has original home addresses for the students. They also have faculty credentials, which could enable some of them to be contacted through their alumni associations.

Gary Keeton was raising horses in Yellow Springs Ohio last time I saw him. (maybe Jeb Bush would know his current whereabouts? What happened to Batir Yamanov? I heard from him a couple of times after I left college, then NOTHING! Anyone seen Teddy Rodriquez? He eft school with some really nice blond girl. I believe they were headed for New York. GREAT PEOPLE BOTH OF THEM!!!

Re: Ellen Makarewicz, Why are there ??? by her name? I've informed you she is deceased. I went to Nonnewaug High School with her graduating in '75. I went to our 20th reunion in '95 to find out she had died in 1991.What I'm not positive on is the cause of death. It was something like eating poisonous mushrooms I think in New Mexico, something really bizarre. Anyway I have an "In Memory" page/photo of her in HS reunion directory. If you'd like a copy I can send one- just let me know to who & where (I don't have a scanner).

We were so egalitarian back in the Sixties. Everyone part of the whole, everyone included. Right? (well maybe) Where (on the big list) is George Hladock (Possible spelling error) Zigfried Shoopee, and his father, and all the other people who cleaned up our mess, cooked our food, and made the college work as well as it did. No mean trick to keep that marshmellow heated, plumbed, and glass in the windows. My particular friend was Ron McGilvery. He was the dining room supervisor. laid back and easy going, I never heard him say a nasty word about ANYONE!!! Pat (I forget her last name) who helped me wash the dishes and clean up after food fights, (Yeah, someone had to clean that mess) she was interested in the music and art that students produced. She was in awe of some of the people there, but as a New Hampshirite she was also reserved and shy. The "community" folks. EVERYBODY or it's no fun. If Leon (what'shisname)gets an invite, shouldn't we at least ask these other folks? Or are they just "the help?" Oh, and for those of you who know who I am....don't worry, I won't be at the reunion.

Wasn't there a professor (1966 -1968) named Allison Cathron, and wasn't he in the Forestry Department? I thought he was my origional advisor, BUT I was so fucked-up that year, I don't remember all the facts! If there was such a Professor I last saw him in Franklin Maine in 1981. He was still driving the same old VW bus he has at Franconia.

Diane Richards is FOUND and knows about the reunion and hopes to attend but hasn't registered yet. I understand the Laura Germain has been found and informed. I have written her but haven't heard back yet. But 2 other people have told me they have been in touch and she is informed.
